deleting timemachine backups

Have you ever wanted to clean up your Time Machine backup destination? With these two little command you can list all Backups your Time Machine did and delete those you don’t need any more.

list backups

To list all the backups just enter:

tmutil listbackups

delete backups

To delete those you dont need any more, use the following:

sudo tmutil delete PATH_TO_BACKUP

If you want to delete more than one backup at a time you can use wildcards in your path. Dont forget to ESCAPE Spaces in PATH

cleanup

This only deletes the backups inside your sparse bundle file If you want to reclaim this space you can compact your sparse bundle

hdiutil compact /path/to/your/sparsebundle
